WHAT IS REIKI?
Reiki is an ancient laying-on-of-hands healing method in which the practitioner serves as an open channel for transmitting universal life force energy or Divine energy (also known as ki, qi, prana, or chi) to a client. The energy is channeled through the practitioner’s hands, which then activates a client’s own natural ability to heal. Reiki hand positions correspond with the body’s endocrine system and the seven major chakras. The endocrine system regulates hormone balance and metabolism. On an energetic level, the endocrine glands correspond to the seven main chakras, or energy centers.
Reiki energy flows to wherever it is needed most, releasing blocked energies, cleansing the body of toxins, working to create a state of balance and harmony, and promoting relaxation and healing. Reiki healing enhances any other therapy or treatment and functions on body, mind and spirit levels. It can be combined excellently with holistic health coaching, holistic nutrition, massage, acupuncture, chiropractic, Rolfing and many more healing arts. A Reiki healing session imparts a gentle, glowing radiance and can create an experience of peace, security and well-being.
With Reiki Distant Healing, ?Reiki healing energy is transmitted over a distance at a previously agreed time.
The following are some commonly reported benefits of Reiki treatment. Research data demonstrates that Reiki treatment can be effective for relaxation, pain management, reduced anxiety, reduced depression, and enhanced well-being:

- Stronger self-esteem
- Support for substance abuse recovery
- Accelerated surgical recovery
- Reduced side effects from radiation, chemotherapy and Rx meds
- Greater self-awareness
- Greater ease and satisfaction in relationship
- Heightened intuition
That leaves the question: is Reiki effective? Or more precisely, from a research perspective, what is Reiki effective for? Here are some articles to check out to find out more:
Reiki goes mainstream: Spiritual touch practice now commonplace in hospitals. Reiki is the hottest new Eastern healing practice making its way into the Western health industry. Like acupuncture, yoga and other once fringe practices, Reiki is now viewed by many as an effective, accepted alternative practice in mainstream America, where at least 1.2 million adults have tried the energy healing therapy.
REIKI IS REACHING THE TOP HOSPITALS From the Johns Hopkins to several cancer centers, Reiki therapy is steadily gaining presence in top medical facilities.
Reiki and Surgery Perhaps most importantly, increasing research allows Western healthcare practitioners to see quantifiable data about the effects of Reiki on patients with a variety of conditions. The largest ongoing study of Reiki in the clinical setting continues to be conducted at Columbia/HCA Portsmouth Regional Hospital, Portsmouth, NH, where more than 8,000 surgical patients have been given pre- and post-surgery Reiki treatments. Reiki is incorporated into their admission procedure and is also administered during transport to surgery. Treatments are given by trained RNs, physical therapists, technicians and support staff.
Research results continue to be consistent. All the patients in this study who received Reiki had the need for less anesthesia, had less bleeding during surgery, used less pain medications, had shorter lengths of stay in the hospital, and indicated greater satisfaction with their hospital experience than other patients.
Effect of Healing Touch on stress perception and biological correlates:?Results suggest that Healing Touch treatment is associated with both physiological and psychological relaxation.
New York Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Campus conducted one of the first studies ever performed to determine the effectiveness of Reiki treatments on the autonomic nervous system. This “blind, random study” included a Reiki treatment group, a “sham” treatment group and a “control” group. The testing began with all participants at “baseline” autonomic nervous systems levels. The results within the Reiki treatment group showed a lowering of these levels including heart rate, respiration and blood pressure. These positive results led the team to recommend further, larger studies to look at the biological effects of Reiki treatment. The now famous cardiovascular surgeon, Dr. Mehmet Oz brought tremendous attention to Reiki when he invited Reiki practitioners to treat patients during open heart surgeries and heart transplant operations. Dr. Oz is often quoted as saying, “Reiki has become a sought-after healing art among patients and mainstream medical professionals.”
Reiki for Mind, Body, and Spirit Support of Cancer Patients Identified as an evidence-based complementary therapy for symptom control and quality of life,12 Reiki is offered to patients in local hospitals, community centers, and cancer support groups, and at leading cancer treatment facilities such as Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (New York, New York), Dana Farber Cancer Center (Boston) and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (Houston).
Reiki in the clinical setting is becoming mainstream. Reiki is now one of the top three complementary in-patient therapies in U.S. hospitals, according to an AHA survey. Hospitals are responding, discovering for themselves the many benefits Reiki can offer. “As our health care system challenges institutions to offer high-quality but cost-effective service, Reiki is being recognized as an important tool to maximize patient care and minimize recovery time.
